Eira is a serf with no magic—but she’s determined to save her people’s sacred embroidery arts from the malicious Lord Rievon, who owns her. When she dares to reclaim them, his brutal punishment nearly kills her.
Powerful mage Lord Toren Beleroth has just returned from war, grieving the murder of his half-brother. Racked by survivor’s guilt, he saves her from Lord Rievon—by marrying her just hours after they meet.
Eira wants nothing to do with this privileged nobleman who serves the Empire she despises. She immediately seeks out the underground resistance movement her new husband is sworn to destroy. But as she begins to understand the impossible position he occupies, their marriage of necessity deepens into something she never expected.
When the resistance movement demands she share Toren’s closely guarded secrets, Eira is left with a choice. Betray the man she never planned to love—or surrender her best chance to free her people.

Meet L.M. Sanders
All my life I’ve surrounded myself with books, which probably explains why I’m both a librarian and author.
I write stories where the intensity of the romantic yearning is matched only by the complexity of the politics and court intrigue. I love a romance where the heroine is largely misunderstood and dismissed by the society around her—until she meets the hero, who not only recognizes her unique qualities but falls for her hard. Then together they accomplish things that neither could have done on their own. Like burning down empires.
When I’m not writing or working in the library, I can usually be found obsessing over creamy chai tea, fluffy cats, and pretty textiles. I live in Montreal with my gamer husband and our three rambunctious kids.
